Things To Do and Activities on Saba

Saba Marine Park

In 1987, a marine park was established with permanent moorings, regulations of use and maintenance and a strong conservation attitude. At that time there were still few divers visiting Saba. The result is controlled diver impact and undamaged reef life, a powerful appreciation by locals and divers together of this pristine environment.

So complimented by this tremendous effort, the Dutch navy donated a four person recompression chamber, now backed up by volunteers from all the dive shops. All dive operations abide by the rules of the park and benefit from their ongoing research and education. Weekly slide shows are given to entertain and inform divers of Saba's special marine life.

Saba's Marine Park has received several honors and remains the only park of its kind in the worlds to be completely self-sufficient in its operation.

The park is situated around the entire island and includes the waters and seabed from the highwater mark down to a depth of 200 feet, as well as offshore seamounts. A zoning system is applied to get the best possible compromise between different uses of the marine environment.

Nature Trails & Walks
The Tourist Office, the Saba Conservation Foundation and many local supporters have adequately marked and maintain trails for easy trekking. Some trails need a guide, all the better to fully appreciate the botanical and historical parts of Saba. Everyone can easily hike over and into Saba's rain forest, tidepools, historic ruins, and rich nature wonderland. Even a walk along Saba's winding road will lead you to a magical view, and a memorable vacation.

Windwardside
The island's second-largest village, perched at 1,968 ft (602 m), commands magnificent views of the Caribbean. Here amid the oleander bushes you'll find rambling lanes and narrow alleyways winding through the hills, and clusters of tiny, neat houses and shops. At the village's northern end is the Church of St. Paul's Conversion, a colonial building with a red-and-white steeple. Just down the road is the Saba Tourist Office, where you can pick up books about Saba.

Saba Museum
Small signs mark the way to the Saba Museum. This 150-year-old house, surrounded by lemongrass and clover, replicates a sea captain's home, with period pieces and old documents. Don't miss the delightful stroll to the museum down the stone-walled Park Lane, one of the prettiest walks in the Caribbean.
