Tuscany, Umbria and Provence - the advantages of harvest season travel

There is so much to be said for the harvest season in France and Italy. Summer crowds are gone; the weather is warm by day and refreshingly cool by night; the fall foliage is spectacular. And villa prices are reduced.

Tuscany:
The waning days of September signal la vendemmia
From your autumn villa in Chianti you can visit a local agriturismo and partake in an actual grape harvest on a working farm. Or, if your penchant is more along the lines of pageantry, join one of the great seasonal wine festivals.

Umbria:
The truffle harvest season is October and November

Getting involved in the truffle harvest can range from taking part in an actual truffle hunt with an expert and his dogs, to visiting a full-up festival where truffles of every variety are featured.

Provence:
The grape harvest takes place in September and October

Provence features a number of prominent appellations throughout the region, and this explains why the grape harvest is so all-consuming here. Recognizable wine appellations include Côtes de Provence, Bandol, Bellet and Cassis.

Provence:
The olive harvest is from September through December

Olives are the culinary lifeblood of Mediterranean society, from Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast to Spain, and in Provence the French bestow on olives the same level of reverence they pay to truffles and grapes.
