A Sampling of the Delicious Fare on St. Barths

Dining on St. Barths is an experience in itself. Food inspired by Caribbean, French, and other cuisines from around the world is often served so artfully that it looks as if ought to be in a gallery rather than on a dinner plate. Steve, traveling with colleagues Anne-Marie and Bill, took a trip to St. Barths and returned with a delighted palate and some lovely recommendations on where to eat on this exquisite Caribbean island.

Anne-Marie, Bill and I checked into the lovely Villa SEG which is modern and minimalist, and has a great view out over Marigot Bay. We ate later at the ever-popular Andy’s Hideaway for a delicious dinner– I had the mahi-mahi with butter sauce, which was excellent.

There had been a fair amount of rain in the weeks before we arrived and St. Barths was lush and green. We spent the next 6 days visiting villas and a few hotels and sampling the fare at a variety of St. Barths’ restaurants.

Some restaurants on St. Barths that I would highly recommend are:

Santa Fe in Lurin: It’s cozy with a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. We shared some escargot and I tried the daurade with virgin sauce. The weather was clear that day and we could easily see the lights on St. Kitts and Statia.

Grain de Sel in Saline: This small Creole restaurant has nice service. Here I had the tuna stir-fry with mango sauce- one of the best meals of the trip.

K’fe Massai in Lorient: This restaurant is dark and comfortable. I loved the arugula soup with truffle oil, and the tomatoes and mozzarella sampler, which offered the dish in three unique styles.

La Langouste in Flamands: We had a nice bright spot by the pool here. I had a salad with shrimp, scallops, and fruit which was very tasty.

La Plage on St. Jean Beach: La Plage offered friendly service and we sat with our feet in the sand. The featured drink was a delicious ‘tangerine fever’ which went down way too smoothly. Here I had mahi-mahi with a passion fruit sauce.

O’Corail in Grand Cul de Sac: This is a cute little beach-side restaurant in Grand Cul de Sac. I enjoyed the fish burger and some fries.

Les Pecheurs at the Sereno Hotel in Grand Cul de Sac: Anne-Marie and I split two different scallop dishes, both of which were very tasty.

Maya’s to Go across from the airport: This is a great spot for a quick coffee, sandwiches and prepared dishes to go or to eat at one of the outdoor tables.

Bonito in Gustavia – below the Carl Gustaf : This restaurant is in a lovely setting and has great seafood. We split the tataki sampler and I had more delicious mahi-mahi.  Afterward, we stopped at Nikki Beach for a drink. It was the main party for the international catamaran races called the Cata-Cup and it was packed with a good band playing along for the festivities.

All in all, we enjoyed a wonderful trip and plenty of delicious meals on the island of St. Barths. My taste buds are already beckoning to go back to this amazing island.
