World Class Shopping in Gustavia

St. Barths is known for its world class shopping, and strolling along the waterfront in Gustavia, it’s clear how the island has earned that reputation.  With what seems like hundreds of small boutiques and art galleries tucked into every corner, perhaps the most impressive are the high end, top French fashion houses represented along the waterfront.

The main street leading into Gustavia,Rue de la Republique is home to some of the best shopping in the world.  In less than one city block you will find Louis Vuitton (there is actually a special St. Barths edition Vuitton handbag sold exclusively in their Gustavia boutique), Chopard, Hermés, Bvlgari, Escada and Cartier, to name a few.  I enjoy taking leisurely strolls along the water and window shopping- the displays alone are right out of the pages of a magazine.

Along side the brand specific shops you will find dozens of boutiques offering the finest selection of everything from couture evening wear to handbags, shoes, and jewelry.   Shops like Calypso and Marina St. Barth carry an assortment of top designers.

Shopping in Gustavia

Perhaps what sets Gustavia apart from other sell known shopping locales like Rodeo Drive and 5th Avenue is the charming Carribean setting.  The shops are nestled between palm trees and gardens, with little atriums and corridors providing more treasures around every corner.  Intermingling with water front cafes and restaurants you can make a day or evening out of the experience while taking in the ambience of a French seaside village. Le Carré D’Or is one of my favorite spots for lunch, dinner, or a small bite to eat.  Tucked within an open air corridor between Cartier, Hermés, and Ralph Lauren, the outdoor bar and seating is a perfect place to refuel or refresh with a signature cocktail while getting your shopping fix.  Just around the corner you will find Café L’Oublis, situated in the center of Gustavia and just across from the famous Le Select (home of the Cheesburger in Paradise). Both the location and ambience provide a perfect place to relax and people watch while enjoying casual French cuisine.
