Tips for Dining Out in Tulum

Do restaurants in Tulum take U.S. dollars?

Although many of the best restaurants in Tulum do take U.S. dollars, especially those that cater to tourists, smaller venues generally do not. We advise paying in pesos, as the exchange rate in restaurants will probably not be in your favor if you pay with U.S. dollars.

Do restaurants in Tulum accept credit cards?

Almost all restaurants in Tulum accept credit cards, from small take-out huts to highly rated gourmet dinner spots. When you pay with a credit card, the exchange rate will be automatically calculated by your bank - and will most often be favorable to the exchange rate calculated by the wait staff when you pay in dollar bills. The only watch out is that from time to time there are power outages and/or internet outages in Tulum, which means that the credit card processing machines aren’t able to take credit cards. For that reason, we recommend that you always bring pesos with you as a fall-back option.

How much is the standard rate to tip in Tulum?

The customary amount of a tip is between 10 to 20 percent. Service charges are sometimes added to a bill, so always make sure to check before adding your own tip.

Are dinner reservations necessary at Tulum restaurants?

Although most restaurants do not require reservations, making one in advance is highly recommended at popular eateries, such as Nu and Wild. Your villa rental agency’s concierge desk can make the reservations for you, sometimes months in advance.
