A St. Martin Trip Report

August 2006
by Doug Snow

Petite Plage 4 & 5 in Grand Case. The setting of these two new beachfront villas is perfect, especially for our Grand Case Restaurants lovers. To have 9 bedrooms, on the beach within walking distance of a dozen gourmet restaurants is wonderful.

Both villas will be private from each other, but will be perfect together for large families or corporate groups. Each villa has a separate gated entrance and each will have a water maker.

Although the villas are similar in design the interiors will be very different. The four-bedroom villa has leather furniture and lots of antiques. Although the 5 bedroom did not have any interior yet, we were told the décor will be clean, simple and modern.

Both properties will feature large U-shaped pools with in-water tables and benches. A large covered pavilion will provide a wonderful outdoor living space surrounded by the pool on three sides. The view of the ocean and beach from all of the rooms are stunning. The masters are located on the second floor with large deck areas and Jacuzzis.

A perfect honeymoon villa is Le Cottage, located next to Le Jardin de la Mer but completely private. This beautiful large studio with medium sized pool is very deluxe and will be priced accordingly.

C SUD was in the early stages of construction. It is very private, has beautiful views over Long Bay Beach and all indoor living areas will be air conditioned.

Villa C JAR located on Plum beach is undergoing a complete renovation and looks like it will be much-improved and of the highest quality when completed. The road along Plum Beach is still unpaved at this point which is a minor irritant.

La Samanna Hotel

St Martin

La Samanna has under gone several major changes. The lobby area will be totally redone and will offer a larger business center. The hotel has four new beach cabanas that can be rented daily. They seem very popular and several were rented during our stay. We each stayed in a Premium Beachfront one-bedroom suite. These are the redecorated suites; very tastefully done in traditional Caribbean style. There is more privacy in the upstairs suites.

The rooms have all been updated. The deluxe rooms have marble floors and a more contemporary feel. The premium rooms have lots of painted tile in bright blues and yellows, giving it a very Caribbean feel.

There is a new Beach Bar and Sun Deck, which is a nice addition to the resort. A new pool will be built this fall in the shape of an "8". One half will be a shallow end for young children. In one of the gardens on the island side of the hotel, a relaxing area has been created. A water garden with a little bridge over the walkway, and a sitting area with teak furniture in the shade and is very relaxing with the soothing sound of the water.

Our last stop at La Samanna was the new 3 bedroom, 4,000 square foot villa. It is located on the cliff just past the Cliff Side accommodations. The villas are wonderfully decorated with a lot of marble and local artwork. All bedrooms have large decks with one central "party area". The views are endless with Long Bay Beach stretching out below.

Overall, we were very impressed with the quality of the villas and can't wait to see the new ones when they are finally completed. With each and every visit it is easy to see the continuous improvements being made that will make our clients vacations and experiences ones that they will want to repeat many times in the years ahead.
