Renting Luxury Villas or Staying in Luxury Resorts - Which One Is Right for You?
A luxury villa offers the opportunity to style every moment of your vacation exactly as you want it. Be as solitary or as active as you choose. Eat, sleep, walk, read, or sunbathe according to your own schedule. Dine out or dine in.
A private villa is ideal for both large and small groups, you can gather for meals and activities, yet there is so much space in a villa that you can also retain a measure of privacy when desired.
If you decide to stay in a luxury resort hotel, you will have access to more services and staff, with the tradeoff that unless you reserve a suite, your group will all be in separate rooms, and sometimes on separate floors. When you reserve a hotel room through WIMCO we offer all the same pre-trip services to speed you on your way to a perfect upscale vacation experience: Air desk to set-up your flights, airport transfer scheduling and baggage transfers, setting-up local sightseeing trips, boat charters, restaurant reservations and more.
Discuss your dates and vacation preferences with our vacation travel specialists to ensure that your St. John vacation comes as close to perfection as possible.
Where is St. John? Why Visit this Island?
The lush tropical island of St John is the smallest of three islands that comprise the U.S. Virgin Islands. It is situated only a short ferry ride from St. Thomas in the Caribbean Sea. Nearly two thirds of this Caribbean island's land area, more than 5,000 acres, is under control of the National Park Service, donated by Laurance Rockefeller in 1956. Included in this park are several beaches along the famous North Shore of the island. The Park is largely pristine and unspoiled, protected for all time from commercial and residential development.
St. John actually lies closer to the British Virgin Islands of Tortola and Virgin Gorda than it is to St. Croix, the third island of the US Virgin Islands.
Vacationers are drawn by the pristine white sand beaches of the North shore that lie within the National Park, the many snorkeling and scuba diving options, the charming waterfront town of Cruz Bay, and the splendid isolation of Coral Bay and the small marina village there.
What Is the Best Time to Visit St. John?
Many travelers consider the climate of the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) ideal, with temperatures between low 70s and high 80s all year. November through April is prime time to vacation in the U.S. Virgin Islands, when much of the United States is cold and snowy. The area is likely to experience tropical storms from August through October.
How to Get to St. John
The island of St. John is accessible by boat only, via regular scheduled ferry service from nearby St Thomas. Many airlines offer direct flights to St. Thomas from East Coast cities and from Puerto Rico.
American, Delta, United, Spirit Airlines and JetBlue all provide frequent service. Non-stop flight time from San Juan, PR to Cyril E. King Airport in Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas is only 33 minutes.
From St. Thomas, visitors can take a taxi to ferry terminals in Red Hook or Charlotte Amalie. All ferries dock in Cruz Bay on St. John. The shorter trip, from downtown Charlotte Amalie, lasts about 20 minutes and costs $6. The other, between Red Hook, St. Thomas, to Cruz Bay, St. John, costs $12 and lasts 40 minutes. Both run frequently.
What Travel Documents Are Needed?
For Americans, traveling to St. John couldn't get much easier! Not even a passport is needed to visit the USVI from the U.S or Puerto Rico! However, if you plan to visit other Caribbean islands, Americans must possess a valid passport in order to clear customs upon entering St. Thomas or St. Croix. All other nationalities must show valid passports.
Vacationing on Saint John is all about natural beauty and relaxation, although the island is known as a boater's paradise, with great beaches and stunning bays. Casual eateries and inviting restaurants exist, and visitors will want to shop for local crafts and island memorabilia.
Caneel Bay Resort alone boasts seven private beaches. Scott Beach and Turtle Bay Beach are both part of the private resort.
Honeymoon Beach is secluded, accessible only by trail or boat, but there's shade available under local trees and seagrapes; Hawks Nest Beach is a local favorite, with parking nearby, and preferred by families with children. Trunk Bay, on St. John's other end, is renowned as one of the world's highly-rated beaches.
Snorkel
St. John has a number of secluded snorkeling spots, and they're all easy to reach. Salt Pond has a beautiful sand beach and reefs with spectacular fish, but also promises sea turtle and stingray sightings.
Trunk Bay, one of the treasures of Virgin Islands National Park, features a unique underwater trail that points the way to the best viewing areas. The $5 admission is worth every penny. Watermelon Cay and Jumble Bay are our other picks for superb underwater adventures in beautiful St. John.
Hike the Island
Explore the Reef Bay Trail with a park Ranger to view the natural landscape's rare flowers and search for petroglyphs left by the island's early inhabitants. More athletic visitors to the island can climb almost to the top of St. John's Bordeaux Mountain, with the assistance of park service maps. The view from Picture Point is outstanding.
Celebrate in Island-Style
Valentine's Day brings an annual well-attended Vow Renewal Ceremony to Trunk Bay Beach. March 31 is St John Transfer Day, commemorating the day the former Danish West Indies island was ceded to the U.S. The Fourth of July is also celebrated annually.
It's a time for music with a calypso beat, costumes and historic revelry, and combines a month-long Carnival celebration with American independence. The coronation of Ms. St. John and a carnival king share equal billing with an impressive fireworks display.
Wine and Dine
Choose a restaurant that offers fine dining, cocktails and wine with a comfortable, unhurried atmosphere, or casual eateries and island bars that are totally informal and filled with fun-loving patrons. The choice is entirely yours.
Cruz Bay offers the most options for dining out, with distinctive seafood to be found at The Longboard and The Terrace. Sweet Plantains in Coral Bay is well-known for its seafood, curries and rum drinks. Sample island fare at LaTapa, watch the sun set and savor imaginative Italian food at ZoZo's Ristorante, and order great burgers, specialty sandwiches, and salads served with a side of "fun" at restaurant/retail store Skinny Legs.
