Trip Report: A Birthday Celebration in Turks & Caicos
by Michael Bowers
Leaving Newport at zero dark forty, we took off for a vacation for two in Provo, Turks & Caicos.
We stayed in villa TNC NUT in Turtle Cove, a charming little one bedroom villa with private pool, gazebo and hammock. This was perfect. The kitchen is well equipped, and the cable TV, wifi, air-conditioning and appliances were just what we wanted. The house has a laundry system and is equipped with keyless entry and an alarm system. Not needing keys while on holiday was incredibly refreshing.
The house is ideally located just a 3 minute walk from the beach. This part of Grace Bay beach has immediate access to Smith’s Reef, which is considered one of the best snorkeling spots on the island.
One afternoon, we organized day passes to Seven Stars Resort, located directly on Grace Bay. This gave us access to beach chairs, umbrella and the proverbial non-motorized water sports (snorkeling equipment, paddle boards, kayaks, hobie cats). The water was so calm that a relaxing paddle board expedition down the bay in front of the other resorts was easy.
For those who have any interest in nature and the life cycle of the conch, a visit to the Caicos Conch Farm is a must. The only one in the world, the farm is very basic and many of the tanks empty when we visited, but the tour was very interesting. A fun bit of trivia: the conchs you get to eat as a visitor are about 4 years old. This tour is also great for those who love food, for the fresh conch was delicious.
