Eden Rock – Hotel Review & Insider’s Guide

Eden Rock – Hotel Review & Insider’s Guide

The setting is remarkable. Eden Rock perches atop a bold rocky promontory that divides fabled St. Jean Beach, with rooms, suites, and villas spread from the craggy eminence itself down to the white sands.

Eden Rock isn’t just one of the finest hotels on St. Barts but also among the most legendary luxury resorts in all the Caribbean. It’s a historic piece of spectacular beachfront property, dating back to the private, celebrity-magnet retreat of legendary aviator/adventurer (and St. Barts mayor) Rémy de Haenen.

Location & Surroundings

Eden Rock lies in the central part of the north shore of St. Barts. Its main building lies atop “the Rock” that splits the curving, roughly milelong white-sand strand of St. Jean Beach. One can see nearby islands in the distance. St. Jean Beach's pristine shores provide couples with a front-row seat to one of St. Barts' most iconic vistas.

The islam’d tiny Gustaf III Airport is nearby—up-close looks at the incoming and outgoing prop planes is an iconic fixture of St. Jean Beach. This is the location of some of the island’s top beach clubs, too, not least the A-lister hangouts of Nikki Beach Saint Barth, La Guerite beach club and GypSea beach club.

St. Jean is the second-largest settlement on St Barts. Eden Rock has the feel of its own little mini-village along the St. Jean bayside, close to and complemented by the rest of the area’s many restaurants, bars, and shops.

Amenities & Services

Immediate access to St-Jean Bay’s much-loved beachfront—ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and watersports, and as a launchpad for chartered cruises, sportfishing, and other offshore pursuits—is one of Eden Rock’s most obvious virtues.

You’re well-covered in the wellness department here at the hotel. The Eden Spa maintains a yacht-flavored sitting room and a trio of treatment. You will also find top-of-the-line Ligne St Barth products and medical-spa sessions on its menu.

Some of the best beachfront eateries and bars on St. Barts draw guests, other vacationers, and even locals. Restaurants at this luxury hotel benefit from the culinary prowess of famed, Michelin-starred French chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, known for high-profile establishments from NYC to Tokyo.

The Sand Bar is an iconic St. Barts restaurant, with casually stylish al fresco dining overlooking Baie de St-Jean. A wood-fired oven turns out such signature delights as a black-truffle pizza with Fontina cheese.

Ease into a main course of whole roast fish-of-the-day with some caviar to start. Vegan-friendly options are available, and the array of desserts includes homemade ice cream.

Location alone helps set Eden Rock Hotel St. Barts apart. After all, it lies in the heart of the most popular beach on the island, and its rocky peninsula juts right out into the sparkling bay. Enjoying classic St. Jean Beach experiences—from plane-watching to the Sunday parties at Nikki Beach—is easy with a front-and-center home base at Eden Rock.

The glamorous history of Eden Rock is also a draw. Everyone from the Rockefellers to Greta Garbo and Robert Mitchum flocked here after Rémy de Haenen built the property in 1950. A recording studio on the grounds, used by artists like John Lennon and Jimmy Buffett, can add an extra layer of excitement to your getaway.

FAQs

Rather uniquely, Eden Rock’s only had two owners. Jane and David Matthews purchased the hotel from its original owner, Rémy de Haenen, in 1995. Today, the Germany-based Oetker Collection manages the 5-star hotel in partnership with the Matthews family.

Eden Rock sits directly on St. Jean Beach, the most well-loved on St. Barts, and divides it into two sections. The western section is popular among surfers, while the calmer waters off the eastern reach provide more family-friendly swimming opportunities.

The check-in time at Eden Rock Hotel St. Barts is 3 PM. Guests check out by noon.
